DPG Physics School Physics of the Ocean
supported by the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus - Foundation
11 - 16 September, 2011,
Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Germany
http://www.pbh.de/en/aktuelles/S211.html
Organizers: Martin Visbeck (IFM-GEOMAR, Kiel) & Wolfgang Roether (Bre
men University)

The target group of the school are postdocs, graduate students, and advanced master students, from all over Europe and beyond, who wish to broaden their understanding of the ocean. They should preferably be engaged in a field neighbouring physical oceanography, such as atmospheric physics/meteorology, hydrology, geophysics, biogeochemistry, and bio- geo-sciences, and should have a sufficient knowledge of basic physics.

World Climate Research Programe Conference

Climate Research in Service to Society

24-28 October 2011 Denver, CO, USA

Submission of abstract deadline: 30 April 2011

http://www.wcrp-climate.org/conference2011/index.html

A better understanding of the behaviour of the climate system and its interactions with other Earth system components is critical to predict its future evolution, reduce vulnerability to high impact weather and climate events, and sustain life. This need is perhaps greater than ever before given that humans have emerged as the dominant agent of future change.  Progress will require, moreover, an increasingly holistic approach across scientific disciplines, as well as an unprecedented commitment to the development of a diverse and talented future workforce. To advance on such challenges, the WCRP will assemble for the first time ever its entire research community, and engage other key international research programmes, in a major Open Science Conference (OSC) in October 2011.  Through a unique synthesis of research findings, the OSC will assess our current state of knowledge on climate variability and change, identify the most urgent scientific issues and research challenges, and ascertain how the WCRP can best facilitate research and develop partnerships critical for progress. By entraining as many young scientists and students as possible from across the world, including less-developed and developing countries, the OSC will facilitate growth of the diverse future workforce needed to meet the increasingly complex scientific challenges of the future.

First, I want to thank Natalie Burls who has made this new website, this is the first news item of 2011. On the program for 2011: a newsletter four times a year that will be edited by our vice-president Francois Engelbrecht. We are also in the process of updating our SASAS mailing list as several members have changed their email addresses and have not warned us (I was a culprit). We will embark on a hunt for new members very soon and we will need the help of all members ยท The site is quite interactive and all members can register to post some news in the news and members forum section. In fact I am trying this feature at the very moment.

Cheers, Mathieu Rouault
