Society Aims and Objectives

As the South African Society for Atmospheric Sciences (SASAS) our main aim is to stimulate interest and support for all branches of the atmospheric sciences, both in South Africa and in the broader context, including the rest of Africa .  This main aim is achieved through encouragement of research and education in the atmospheric sciences.  This is achieved by collaboration between organisations and institutions interested in the science of the atmosphere.

SASAS was inaugurated in 1983. It is administered by a Council, comprising four officers (President, Vice President, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer) and ten Councillors, all of whom are re-elected bi-annually.

Membership and SASAS Members

SASAS membership is open to all persons who are in agreement with the aims and objectives of the Society. SASAS consists of Honorary Members, Ordinary Members, Institutional Members and Student Members.  Prospective Members shall be proposed and seconded by current, paid-up members of SASAS and subsequently approved by Council. All members are required to obey the Code of Ethics.

Code of Ethics

SASAS has a Code of Ethics that all members are required to obey.  The following are the main points:

  • Members shall conduct themselves in a manner which reflects dignity and honour on the profession of atmospheric scientists.
  • Members shall not knowingly take credit for work done by others; in publications and meetings credit shall be given where it is due.
  • In scientific practice members shall base their work on scientific principles applied in a scientific manner.
  • Members shall refrain from making exaggerated and unwarranted claims and statements.
  • Members who contribute new knowledge to the profession are expected to make known to the scientific world results of their significant work.

The annual membership fee is kept at a very modest level, annually reviewed and approved by the assembled members at the Annual General Meeting. This fee currently stands at R50 per annum. The membership form may also be downloaded here.
